What size and height should a coffee table be?
A coffee table usually works best at about two-thirds of the sofa's length, placed 40–50 cm from the front of the seat, with a height close to the sofa's seat height or a few centimetres lower. Low, deep sofas suit low tables of 20–35 cm, while standard sofas with 42–45 cm seats suit tables of about 35–45 cm. Side tables should sit near the height of the sofa arm, typically 50–60 cm.
1. Size the table to the sofa
The two-thirds rule keeps the table in proportion and leaves space at each end for legs and movement. Applied to common sofa lengths:
| Sofa length | Coffee table length | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 180–200 cm | 120–135 cm | Barrett 120 × 120 cm |
| 210–230 cm | 140–150 cm | Miller 140 × 80 cm, Nova 140 × 75 cm |
| 240–280 cm | 160–180 cm | Superquadra 180 × 104.5 cm, Nova 180 × 90 cm |
For an L-shaped sectional, a square or round table often fits better than a long rectangle, because it serves both arms of the sofa. Miller's 100 × 100 cm table and Horizonte's 104 and 140 cm square tables are examples.
2. Leave the right gap
Allow 40–50 cm between the front of the sofa seat and the table edge. That is close enough to reach a cup and wide enough to walk past. In a larger room, keep at least 75–90 cm for main walkways around the seating area.
3. Match the height to the seat
A coffee table at or slightly below seat height is comfortable to reach. The right height depends on the sofa:
- Very low, lounge-style sofas pair with low tables. Superquadra is 22 cm high, Horizonte 13–21 cm and Miller 31 cm.
- Standard sofas with 42–45 cm seats suit tables of about 35–45 cm, such as Nova at 34 cm or the largest Barrett table at 45 cm.
- Raised or formal seating can take a slightly taller table, around 45–48 cm.
Check the seat height of the sofa you are buying rather than assuming a standard figure; lounge sofas can be 10 cm lower than conventional ones.
4. Consider pairs and nesting sets
Two tables at different heights can give the presence of a large table with more flexibility. Pofung's Egmont is a pair of Ø92 cm marble tables at 32 and 42 cm high, designed to be used together. Nesting sets such as Barrett combine 120, 90 and 60 cm tables at three heights, so pieces can be moved beside chairs when needed. Measure the combined footprint, not only the largest table.
5. Choose side tables by arm height
A side table should sit roughly level with the sofa or chair arm, usually 50–60 cm. Pofung's Ripple tables are 51 and 61 cm high with tray-edged marble tops. Many side tables in the Stone & Metal collection take a round top of Ø40 or Ø55 cm, small enough to fit beside an armchair.
6. Use a stone top cut to size
If your layout needs an exact size, choose a table whose top is cut to order. The J-034 coffee table, for example, takes a round marble or sintered stone top of Ø60, Ø80 or Ø100 cm on the same base. For guidance on the two materials, read our comparison of marble and sintered stone.
