How much bigger is a bed frame than the mattress?
A bed frame is always larger than its mattress, and the difference ranges from a few centimetres to more than a metre. A simple upholstered frame may add about 10 cm to the width, while a bed with side wings or integrated panels can be over 100 cm wider than the mattress. Plan the room around the bed's overall dimensions, not the mattress size, and confirm which mattress standard the frame is built for before ordering.
1. Confirm the mattress standard first
Mattress sizes differ by market, and a frame built for one standard will not fit another. Common sizes include:

2. Read the overall dimensions
The difference between frame and mattress depends on the design. Four examples from the Pofung bed collection show the range:
- Roger: 190 cm wide for a 180 × 200 cm mattress, only 10 cm wider.
- Tatlin: 224 cm wide for the same mattress, 44 cm wider because of its leather-framed headboard.
- Yang: 292 cm wide for a 180 × 200 cm mattress, 112 cm wider because of its upholstered side wings.
- Tufty: 247 cm long, so with a standard 200 cm-long mattress the padded frame adds more than 40 cm to the length.
Some beds come with optional side units or panels. Brasilia is 189 cm wide on its own, but about 313 cm with two 62 cm side units. Nova ranges from 178 cm to 372 cm wide depending on whether side panels and shelves are included.
3. Plan clearances around the bed
Once you know the overall size, leave space to move around it:
- About 60–70 cm beside the bed for walking and making the bed.
- About 70–90 cm at the foot of the bed, more if a bench or wardrobe doors open into that space.
- Nightstand width on each side, unless the bed already includes bedside surfaces.
For a 180 × 200 cm mattress, a compact frame such as Roger needs a wall of roughly 190 cm plus two nightstands, while Yang needs almost three metres before nightstands are considered.
4. Check the headboard height
Headboard heights vary widely. Yang is only 66 cm high, Roger 91 cm, and Icon 171 cm. Compare the height with window sills, wall lights, switches and artwork before choosing. A tall headboard needs a clear wall; a low one leaves space above for lighting or shelves.
5. Match the nightstands
A nightstand top usually works best within about 5 cm of the mattress surface. Pofung nightstands range from 34 cm to 64 cm high, so compare the height with the finished mattress rather than the frame. Also check that drawers can open fully beside the bed.
6. Plan the delivery route
Large headboards and wide frames must pass through doors, corridors and lifts. Measure the narrowest point of the route and ask the supplier how the bed is packed and whether the headboard ships as one piece. This matters especially for wide designs and for hotel projects with many identical rooms.
