# Bouclé, Velvet or Leather? Choosing Upholstery for Homes and Hospitality

Upholstery decides how a sofa looks, feels and ages. Compare the most popular options and learn what to check on a specification sheet.

The same sofa frame can look casual, glamorous or tailored depending on its cover. Before you confirm an order, compare how each material performs in the space where it will be used.

## Bouclé

Bouclé is woven from looped yarns, giving a soft, textured surface that suits rounded, organic shapes. It hides minor marks well but loops can snag on pet claws, jewellery or rough fasteners. Choose tighter, lower loops for busy homes.

## Velvet

Velvet has a dense, short pile that reflects light and deepens colour, which is why it is common in light luxury interiors. Polyester and performance velvets resist crushing and staining better than cotton velvet. Expect visible pile direction — which many clients see as part of its character.

## Leather and nubuck

Full-grain and top-grain leathers are durable and develop a patina over time; nubuck is buffed for a velvety touch but marks more easily. For hospitality, ask about protective finishes and colour consistency across hides.

## What to check on the specification

| Item | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Abrasion resistance (Martindale or Wyzenbeek) | Indicates how the fabric withstands rubbing; contract projects normally require higher ratings than domestic use. |
| Fire standard | Requirements differ by market — for example BS 5852 in the UK or California TB 117-2013 in the US. |
| Pilling and colour fastness | Affects how the surface looks after months of use and sunlight. |
| Cleaning code | Tells housekeeping or end users which cleaning methods are safe. |
